We Still Need Natural Gas!

Although the Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Healy along with the Town of Brookline are seeking mandates to reduce carbon emissions, the Town took a draconian approach in November 2019 by requiring homeowners and developers to install electric heat, hot water and appliances by banning natural gas hook ups. The problem is that it is against state law. Consequently, Ms. Healy struck down the by-law last month but with commentary that she supported the town’s initiative. The law is on our side because the cost of using electricity versus natural gas is two to three times higher… Yikes!

We at Neighborhood Energy support a balanced approach in reducing our carbon footprint. We offer Carbon Offset for natural gas and Renewable Energy and supply services such as certificates, solar deployment and green roofing. But we also support natural gas supply solutions because of the abundance, cost and efficiency. Although the Henry Hub gas from Louisiana is trading at about $0.20 per therm, the spot prices landed in Dracut MA is around $0.19. As an FYI, an electrical rate of $0.06/kWh is rare and would require natural gas to be sold at $1.77/therm for it to match.

The cost study below generated by the WGL Company shows the cost differences in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Although not New England but we get the picture!

Let us know if you’d like to minimize your business’s energy footprint, and you may be surprised to hear many of the solutions offer significant savings in energy costs.
